Overview
CodeCompanion adds a chat buffer, inline code transformations and an action palette to Neovim, backed by HTTP adapters for providers such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Copilot and Ollama. It also connects to CLI agents like Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI through the Agent Client Protocol, and to MCP servers. It is written in Lua and installs through lazy.nvim or any other plugin manager.
Who it is for: Neovim users who want LLM chat and coding agents in their editor
Strengths
- Many built-in adapters, including Ollama, OpenRouter and Azure OpenAI, plus a custom adapter API
- ACP support lets Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and others run inside Neovim
- Supports MCP, skills, rules files (CLAUDE.md, .cursor/rules) and custom prompts
- Review UI to comment on and approve or reject agent code changes
Weaknesses
- Works only inside Neovim
- Depends on plenary.nvim and nvim-treesitter being installed
- Maintainer accepts contributions at his discretion
- Hardware requirements for local models are not documented
What it needs
- Docker
- Needs Neovim, plenary.nvim, nvim-treesitter
- Models: Anthropic, OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Google Gemini, GitHub Copilot
