Overview
cmux is a Swift/AppKit macOS terminal built on libghostty that reads your existing Ghostty config. It adds a sidebar showing git branch, PR status, working directory and ports per workspace, plus notification rings driven by OSC 9/99/777 sequences or `cmux notify` from agent hooks. It also has an in-app scriptable browser, SSH workspaces, and a CLI and Unix socket API.
Who it is for: macOS developers running several terminal coding agents in parallel
Strengths
- Native Swift/AppKit app, not Electron; libghostty rendering and reads existing Ghostty config
- Works with any agent that runs in a terminal; hooks for Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and others
- Everything scriptable through CLI and Unix socket, including browser automation and split panes
- Session restore of layout, scrollback and supported agent sessions via `cmux hooks setup`
Weaknesses
- macOS only; no Linux or Windows build
- License detected as NOASSERTION; README says GPL, so check terms
- Does not checkpoint live processes; needs opt-in tmux or zellij for detach/reattach
- iOS companion is beta, with early access tied to the Founders Edition
What it needs
- Needs libghostty, Sparkle (auto-update)
- Models: Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Amp
