Overview
Qwen Code is a TypeScript coding agent that runs as the `qwen` CLI in your project, with subagents, MCP, hooks, plan mode, sandboxing and headless mode (`qwen -p`). It talks to OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and Qwen APIs, or local models via Ollama and vLLM. The same agent is exposed through VS Code, Zed and JetBrains plugins, a desktop app, an experimental `qwen serve` daemon, SDKs and chat channels.
Who it is for: Developers wanting a model-agnostic, open-source CLI coding agent
Strengths
- Multi-protocol: OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Qwen APIs, plus Ollama or vLLM, switchable at runtime
- Many front ends: CLI, VS Code, Zed, JetBrains, desktop app, Telegram, DingTalk, WeChat, Feishu
- TypeScript, Python and Java SDKs plus headless mode for CI and scripts
- Apache-2.0; README lists SWE-bench Verified results across 7 versions
Weaknesses
- Web UI and `qwen serve` daemon are marked experimental
- Requires Node.js 22+ for the npm install path
- Benchmarks use Qwen 3.7 Max; results with other models are not reported
- Default installer is a script piped to a shell, hosted on an Aliyun OSS bucket
What it needs
- GPU optional
- Docker
- Needs Node.js 22+ (npm install), LLM provider API key or local model server
- Models: Qwen, OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Ollama
