Overview

sem is a Rust CLI that parses code with tree-sitter and reports changes as functions, classes and methods instead of lines. It adds verbs for finding definitions and callers, selecting affected tests, running the project's own checkers on a change, and producing review certificates for commit ranges. Every verb supports --json, and `sem mcp` exposes them as MCP tools.

Who it is for: Engineers and agent users wanting semantic diffs and impact data from Git

Strengths

  • Works in any Git repo with no setup; also diffs arbitrary files outside Git
  • Every verb has --json output, and sem mcp serves the same verbs as MCP tools
  • sem impact --tests selects affected tests; sem check returns exit 0, 1 or 2
  • Many install routes: Homebrew, winget, Scoop, npm, cargo, Docker, release binaries

Weaknesses

  • Binary name collides with GNU Parallel's sem; needs PATH or alias fix
  • Cloud queries and reviews need an account; opt-in per repo
  • Module graph and affected-test selection are most detailed for JS/TS
  • sem promises is hidden from sem --help; README shows license badge as MIT

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Docker
  • Needs Git, tree-sitter, SQLite cache
