Overview
WebCodex is a Rust Server and Runner pair that exposes development tools over MCP to cloud AI clients such as ChatGPT and Claude. The Server authenticates requests and routes them to a Runner on the machine that holds the repository, where the agent can read and edit files, run tests and compilers, and use Git. A browser Runtime Console and a Desktop app cover jobs, sessions and diff review.
Who it is for: Developers who want ChatGPT or Claude to work in their local repos via MCP
Strengths
- Repository and toolchain stay on your machine, not in a hosted workspace
- Server/Runner split lets several computers join one Server
- `webcodex share` gives a temporary one-repository trial
- Long-running jobs, sessions and Git diffs are reviewable in a browser console
Weaknesses
- Unified installers are still under development; native install acceptance is incomplete
- Tool results and requested file content can still be returned to the AI client
- Can edit files and run commands, so project roots must be scoped carefully
- README says maintainer response time may vary
What it needs
- no GPU
- Docker + Compose
- Needs Node.js 18+, Git, Rust toolchain (build from source)
- Models: ChatGPT, Claude, MCP clients
