Overview
Repomix reads a local or remote Git repository and writes a single file, XML by default or Markdown, JSON or plain text, with a directory tree and file contents. It reports token counts, respects .gitignore, .ignore and .repomixignore, and uses Secretlint to leave out files matching known credential formats. The --compress option uses Tree-sitter to keep code structure while cutting tokens.
Who it is for: Developers feeding whole codebases into LLM chats or agents
Strengths
- One command (npx repomix@latest) produces the packed file with no install
- Token counts per file and for the whole repo help fit context limits
- --compress uses Tree-sitter to reduce tokens while keeping code structure
- Packs remote repos by URL, branch or commit, and file lists piped via --stdin
Weaknesses
- Output is a static snapshot; you paste or upload it to the model yourself
- Secret detection only covers known credential formats via Secretlint
- VSCode extension is community-maintained, not part of the core project
- Whole large repos can exceed model context unless filtered or compressed
What it needs
- no GPU
- Docker
- Needs Node.js
- Models: Model-agnostic: output is a file for Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Llama, Grok and others
