Overview
Context Mode is an MCP server that runs analysis in a sandbox so raw tool output stays out of the agent's context. It logs edits, git operations and tasks in SQLite, indexes them with FTS5, and retrieves relevant events via BM25 after compaction. It ships hooks and routing for Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Copilot, Cursor and others.
Who it is for: Developers running coding agents who hit context limits and compaction loss
Strengths
- Sandbox tools cut raw output; README cites 315 KB reduced to 5.4 KB
- Session events stored in SQLite with FTS5/BM25 retrieval after compaction
- Hooks for Claude Code, Gemini CLI, VS Code and JetBrains Copilot, Copilot CLI, Cursor
- Claude Code plugin install, plus MCP-only option via npx
Weaknesses
- Elastic License 2.0, not an OSI open-source license
- Non-hook platforms need a manual routing file copy
- Most platforms require Node.js >= 22.5 or Bun
- Savings figures are README examples, not independent benchmarks
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs Node.js >= 22.5 or Bun
- Models: Claude Code, Gemini CLI, VS Code Copilot, JetBrains Copilot, GitHub Copilot CLI
