Overview
Python implementation of the Model Context Protocol. It lets you write MCP servers that expose tools, resources and prompts from type-hinted functions, and clients that connect to any MCP server over stdio, Streamable HTTP or SSE. An optional cli extra adds the mcp dev, mcp run and mcp install commands.
Who it is for: Python developers building MCP servers or clients for LLM apps
Strengths
- Tool schemas come from Python type hints and docstrings, no hand-written JSON Schema
- Server and client in one package
- Supports stdio, Streamable HTTP and SSE transports
- Docs include a get-started guide, API reference and v2 migration guide
Weaknesses
- Requires Python 3.11 or newer
- A library, not a ready-made server; you write the tools yourself
- v2 has a migration guide, so v1 code may need changes
- README gives no auth or deployment details; those are only in the docs
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs Python 3.11+
- port 8000
