Overview

DBHub is an MCP server that connects clients such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code to PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle and SQLite. It exposes two tools by default, execute_sql and search_objects, with opt-in explain_sql and health_check, plus custom parameterized tools defined in a TOML file. A built-in web workbench runs queries without an MCP client.

Who it is for: Developers giving MCP-capable coding agents guarded access to SQL databases

Strengths

  • Two default tools at about 1.4k tokens, versus 19k for MCP Toolbox per README
  • Read-only mode, row limit and query timeout guard against runaway queries
  • Several databases in one process via TOML config; SSH tunneling and SSL/TLS supported
  • Runs via npx, Docker, MCP Bundle or Claude Code plugin; includes a web workbench

Weaknesses

  • No approval flow, access control, data masking or audit logging; README points to Bytebase
  • Development requires Node.js 22.5 or newer because it uses node:sqlite
  • Only six SQL engines listed; no NoSQL or warehouse engines mentioned
  • Token comparison figures are the project's own, not independently verified

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Docker
  • Needs Node.js >= 22.5.0 (development), A target database: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle or SQLite
  • port 8080
