Overview
ANUS is a terminal coding agent built on the pi engine. It reads code, edits files and runs shell commands, sending each request to the highest-ranked free model you have a key for and falling back to the next when one is rate-limited or fails mid-answer. The ranked list refreshes twice a day from anus.dev/free-models.json.
Who it is for: Developers wanting a CLI coding agent that runs on free API tiers
Strengths
- Automatic fallback across free models when one hits a rate limit or cuts off
- Ignores paid keys in the shell unless ANUS_ENV_KEYS=1 is set
- Keys, sessions and settings stay in ~/.anus/agent; sends data only to providers you configure
- Installs with npm or a curl script; non-interactive mode via anus -p
Weaknesses
- Free tiers are capped, e.g. OpenRouter 50 requests a day without a $10 top-up
- Some free providers may train on your prompts and code
- Model quality varies by day, since routing depends on which free model is awake
- Depends on a remote ranked list at anus.dev; free tiers change often
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs Node.js 22.19+, At least one free API key (OpenRouter, Gemini, Groq, Mistral or Cerebras)
- Models: OpenRouter free models, Google Gemini, Groq, Cerebras, Mistral
