Overview

Split npm packages, @modelcontextprotocol/server and @modelcontextprotocol/client, implementing the 2026-07-28 MCP spec on Node.js, Bun and Deno. The server side covers tools, resources, prompts, Streamable HTTP, stdio and auth helpers; the client side covers transports and OAuth helpers. Optional thin adapters exist for Node HTTP, Express, Fastify and Hono.

Who it is for: TypeScript developers building MCP servers or clients

Strengths

  • Reference SDK maintained in the modelcontextprotocol organization, tracking the 2026-07-28 spec
  • Runs on Node.js, Bun and Deno
  • Tool and prompt schemas use Standard Schema: Zod v4, Valibot, ArkType
  • Separate Express, Fastify, Hono and Node HTTP adapter packages

Weaknesses

  • v2 is a breaking change from v1; migration guide required
  • v1.x stays on a separate branch with its own package name and docs
  • Library only: no ready-made servers, so you write the tool logic
  • License is mixed: Apache-2.0 for new contributions, MIT for existing code

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Node.js, Bun or Deno, zod or another Standard Schema library
