Overview

Toad is a Python terminal UI that front-ends coding agents such as Claude, Gemini, Codex and OpenHands through the Agent Client Protocol. It includes a real persistent shell, a Markdown prompt editor, an @ fuzzy file picker, diff views, concurrent agent sessions and session resume. It can also be served in a browser with `toad serve`.

Who it is for: Terminal users who want one UI for several coding agents

Strengths

  • Works with many agents via ACP, with an in-UI agent browser and installer
  • Integrated shell keeps cwd and env vars, and supports interactive commands
  • Runs several agents from different providers at once, with session resume
  • Can be served as a web app with `toad serve`

Weaknesses

  • No native Windows support; WSL is needed
  • AGPL-3.0 license; commercial license required for non-AGPL use
  • Model selection, MCP server UI and built-in editor are still on the roadmap
  • Default macOS terminal gives a reduced experience

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs uv, Python 3.14, xclip (Linux clipboard), a coding agent supporting ACP
  • Models: Claude, Gemini, Codex, OpenHands
