Overview

ProxyAI is a Kotlin plugin for JetBrains IDEs that adds chat, inline autocomplete, next-edit suggestions and natural-language code edits. It connects to hosted providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure and Mistral, or to a self-hosted model for offline use. Suggested changes stream into the editor and can be reviewed in diff view before applying.

Who it is for: JetBrains IDE users wanting a Copilot alternative with their own model provider

Its own README calls it an alternative to GitHub Copilot.

Ranked among open-source alternatives to GitHub Copilot (#10 of 10).

Strengths

  • Chat can reference project files, folders, git history, web docs and images
  • Auto Apply streams edits into the editor with diff preview and accept or reject
  • Works with hosted providers or a self-hosted model for offline use
  • Also generates commit messages and name suggestions

Weaknesses

  • Runs only inside JetBrains IDEs; no VS Code or standalone editor
  • Collects anonymous usage data, with user consent
  • README does not name supported self-hosted backends or model formats
  • Building from source needs git submodules and Gradle runIde

What it needs

  • Needs JetBrains IDE, Gradle (build from source)
  • Models: OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure, Mistral, self-hosted models
  • README: alternative to GitHub Copilot
