Overview
OpenClaude is a Node.js terminal coding agent with bash, file edit, grep, glob, sub-agent, task, MCP and web tools. It connects to OpenAI-compatible APIs, Gemini, GitHub Models, Codex, Ollama, Atomic Chat and many gateways, with provider profiles saved through `/provider`. It also supports background sessions, session resume and fork, and a bundled VS Code extension.
Who it is for: Developers wanting a terminal coding agent on any LLM provider
Strengths
- Many providers behind one CLI, including local Ollama and Atomic Chat
- Guided `/provider` setup with saved profiles; also configurable via env vars
- Background sessions via `--bg`, with ps, logs and kill commands
- Resume and fork conversations; bundled VS Code extension
Weaknesses
- License not clearly detected: badge says MIT, detected value is NOASSERTION
- `openclaude attach` does not yet reattach a background session terminal
- Does not read ~/.claude config, so Claude Code settings need manual migration
- Requires Node.js 22 or newer for npm installs
What it needs
- GPU optional
- Docker
- Needs Node.js >=22, ripgrep, LLM provider API key or local Ollama
- Models: OpenAI-compatible, Gemini, GitHub Models, Codex, Ollama
