Overview

jCodeMunch indexes a repository locally with tree-sitter (70+ languages) and exposes MCP tools such as search_symbols and get_symbol_source, so agents fetch single functions instead of whole files. It also provides structural queries like find_importers, get_blast_radius and check_edit_safe. On the project's pinned benchmark (express, fastapi, gin) it used 29.2x fewer tokens than a grep-and-read baseline.

Who it is for: Developers using coding agents on large repos who want lower token spend

Strengths

  • Symbol-level retrieval with byte offsets; README benchmark shows 96.6% fewer tokens than grep-and-read
  • Structural tools grep lacks: find_importers, get_blast_radius, find_dead_code, check_edit_safe
  • Local index in ~/.code-index/; works with Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Codex CLI, Windsurf
  • Benchmark harness, pinned commits and methodology are published for reproduction

Weaknesses

  • License is dual-use: free for personal use, commercial use needs a paid license
  • Gains are small for edits needing whole-file context; README lists ~0% savings there
  • Agent must be told to prefer the tools (CLAUDE.md line), or it keeps reading files
  • Sends an anonymous savings counter by default; opt out with share_savings: false

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Docker + Compose
  • Needs Python, uv, pipx or pip, tree-sitter-language-pack
