Overview

SocratiCode is a local stdio MCP server, also packaged as plugins for Claude Code, Codex and VS Code, that indexes a repository into Qdrant using AST-aware chunking and RRF-fused semantic plus BM25 search. It also builds dependency graphs, symbol-level impact and call-flow analysis across 18 languages, and searchable artifacts such as database schemas and API specs. A file watcher keeps the index current, and embeddings run on local Ollama by default.

Who it is for: Developers giving MCP-capable coding agents search over large repositories

Strengths

  • Hybrid semantic and BM25 search with AST-aware chunking over a Qdrant index
  • Impact analysis and call-flow tracing across 18 languages, plus dependency graph explorer
  • Resumable batched indexing and a file watcher; README cites repos up to about 40M lines
  • Local embeddings by default, with OpenAI or Google Gemini and external Qdrant as options

Weaknesses

  • AGPL-3.0 license may constrain embedding in proprietary products
  • Default setup needs Docker running for managed Qdrant and Ollama
  • Docker containers cannot use the GPU on macOS or Windows; native Ollama is needed for speed
  • Hosted team index, SSO and audit logs are only in the separate Cloud beta

What it needs

  • GPU optional
  • Compose
  • Needs Node.js 18.17+, Docker, Qdrant, Ollama
  • Models: Ollama (local embeddings), OpenAI embeddings, Google Gemini embeddings

Quick answers

Is socraticode open source?

Yes. Its code is on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license.

Can you run socraticode with Docker?

Yes. Its repository has a Docker setup: a Dockerfile, a Compose file or a published image.
