Overview
Grok Build is the source for the `grok` CLI, a full-screen terminal agent that reads your codebase, edits files, runs shell commands and searches the web. It runs interactively, headlessly for scripts and CI, or inside editors through the Agent Client Protocol (ACP). The bundled user guide covers MCP servers, skills, plugins, hooks and sandboxing.
Who it is for: Developers who want a terminal coding agent for local, CI or editor use
Strengths
- Three run modes: interactive TUI, headless for scripting and CI, and ACP for editors
- Prebuilt binaries for macOS, Linux and Windows via a one-line install script
- Supports MCP servers, skills, plugins and hooks, per the bundled user guide
- Apache-2.0 first-party code, with third-party notices documented in the repo
Weaknesses
- External contributions are not accepted
- Repo is synced periodically from a private monorepo, not developed in the open
- Browser authentication on first launch; supported models are not listed in the README
- Windows source builds are untested; building needs DotSlash and protoc
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs Rust toolchain (build from source), DotSlash (build from source), protoc (build from source)
