Overview

TypeScript MCP server that wraps the GitLab API with 276 tools covering projects, merge requests, issues, pipelines, wiki, releases, tags and milestones. It runs over stdio, SSE or Streamable HTTP and authenticates with a personal access token, OAuth2, an MCP OAuth proxy, or per-request remote authorization. Toolsets, permission modes and a regex deny list limit what an agent can call.

Who it is for: Developers connecting coding agents to GitLab, including self-hosted instances

Strengths

  • Four auth modes: PAT, local OAuth2, MCP OAuth proxy, per-request remote authorization
  • Permission modes readonly, modify and full, plus toolset, allow-list and deny-regex filtering
  • Works with self-hosted GitLab through a configurable API URL
  • Ships as npm package, Homebrew formula, Nix flake and a Claude Desktop .mcpb bundle

Weaknesses

  • 276 tools is large; default is a lean core toolset and others must be enabled
  • The gitlab_api_request tool bypasses group and project restrictions and is exposed to prompt injection
  • Several legacy flags (USE_GITLAB_WIKI, USE_MILESTONE, USE_PIPELINE) are deprecated and removed in v3.0.0
  • README is long, with many env vars and flags spread across docs

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Docker + Compose
  • Needs GitLab instance, Node.js >=18.17, GitLab personal access token or OAuth
