Overview

Codex Router runs a per-user background service that adds external providers (Anthropic, Kimi, DeepSeek, xAI, Z.ai, Qwen plan, Ollama Cloud, OpenRouter and others) to the Codex App and CLI model picker. Credentials are entered in hidden local prompts or reused from official CLI OAuth sessions. It also ships an Electron Control Center, a tray app and a macOS desktop panel, and can serve Gemini CLI, Claude Code, Cursor and OpenClaw.

Who it is for: Codex users who want to run third-party hosted models in Codex

Strengths

  • Long model table across many providers, with separate global and China endpoints for Kimi and StepFun
  • Catalog is credential-aware: only models with a stored key or valid OAuth session appear
  • Credentials stay local; prompts are hidden and other CLIs' OAuth tokens are not copied
  • Installers for macOS, Linux and Windows, a Homebrew tap, and a credential-free idle install

Weaknesses

  • Independent project, not affiliated with OpenAI or the model vendors
  • No prebuilt macOS .dmg; it builds locally and needs the full Xcode app
  • Subscription agent bridges are experimental and reject permission requests by default
  • Homebrew install is CLI-only, has no Control Center, and builds Python deps from source
