Overview
Claude Code Router runs a local gateway on port 3456 that Claude Code, Codex, Grok CLI, Kimi CLI, Kilo Code, OpenCode and other clients point at. Providers, models, credentials and routing rules are managed in an Electron desktop app or an npm CLI with a browser UI. It adds retries, ordered fallbacks, credential pools, request logs with token and cost estimates, and tools such as web search, MCP and ToolHub.
Who it is for: Developers using several coding agents who want one provider and routing layer
Strengths
- One local endpoint for ten named agents, so provider config lives in one place
- Retries, key rotation, credential pools and ordered fallback models are built in
- Logs show resolved provider, model, latency, tokens and estimated cost per request
- Ships as desktop app (macOS, Windows, Linux), npm CLI or Docker Compose
Weaknesses
- Docker script builds against a sibling ../../next-ai/gateway checkout when present
- Windows desktop packaging must run on Windows x64 because of native better-sqlite3
- Remote exposure needs care; README points to a separate Docker guide for it
- Large surface (AgentClaw chat relays, browser automation, plugins) beyond plain routing
