Overview

Babysitter lets you write a workflow as a JavaScript process that calls tasks, breakpoints and quality gates, then drives an AI coding agent through it step by step. Every decision is recorded in an event-sourced journal. It installs as a plugin for 12 harnesses, including Claude Code and Codex, and has an internal harness for headless CI runs.

Who it is for: Engineers who want scripted, auditable multi-step runs of AI coding agents

Strengths

  • Workflows are plain JavaScript, with human breakpoints and quality gates enforced in code
  • Same processes run across 12 supported harnesses via the Adapters runtime
  • Internal harness runs processes headless in CI with no external coding agent
  • Event-sourced journal supports resuming interrupted runs and diagnosing them

Weaknesses

  • Install is split across several npm packages (babysitter, adapters-cli, genty-platform)
  • Only Claude Code and Codex have dedicated pages; Codex is beta, most others experimental
  • Adapters CLI needs Node 22.13+, higher than the Node 20 baseline
  • No hosted demo; the monorepo is large and the README is dense

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Node.js 20+, AI coding harness (e.g. Claude Code)
  • Models: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot
