Overview
LangChain4j is a Java library that puts 20+ LLM providers and 30+ embedding stores behind one API, so providers can be swapped without rewriting code. It covers prompt templating, chat memory, function calling, RAG pipelines and agents, with integrations for Quarkus, Spring Boot, Helidon and Micronaut. It is independent of the Python LangChain project.
Who it is for: Java and JVM developers adding LLMs, RAG or agents to applications
Strengths
- Unified API across 20+ LLM providers and 30+ embedding stores
- Integrates with Quarkus, Spring Boot, Helidon and Micronaut
- Covers prompt templates, chat memory, tool calling, RAG and agents
- Separate examples repo with plain Java and framework samples
Weaknesses
- JVM only; no Python or JavaScript support
- README says some features are still being worked on
- Quarkus, Helidon and Micronaut support is in separate dependencies
- Documentation chatbot is marked experimental
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs JVM, LLM provider API
- Models: OpenAI, Google Vertex AI, Pinecone, Milvus
