Overview
Waku is a Rust desktop app built on GPUI that wraps installed coding agent CLIs such as Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor CLI, OpenCode and Amp. It manages projects and independent sessions, with model switching, queued or steered follow-ups, and Git-backed checkpoints. A standalone waku-daemon owns the SQLite task data and workspaces, and a browser client talks to it over WebSocket.
Who it is for: Developers who run several coding agent CLIs and want one native desktop UI
Strengths
- Supports nine agent CLIs, including Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor CLI, OpenCode and Pi
- Stores projects, sessions and transcripts locally; no Waku account or remote service needed
- Daemon uses an authenticated, versioned WebSocket protocol and is loopback-only by default
- Runs on macOS, Linux (Wayland and X11) and Windows with self-updating installers
Weaknesses
- Needs at least one agent CLI installed and authenticated separately
- Embedded browser and computer-use integration are macOS-only
- Local folder picker and PTY unavailable when connected to an external daemon
- GPL-3.0-only license may limit embedding in proprietary products
What it needs
- Needs At least one supported agent CLI (Amp, Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor CLI, Fx, Grok Build, Kimi Code, OpenCode, Pi), Rust 1.96+ and Bun (development only)
- Models: Amp, Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor CLI, Fx
