Overview

thClaws is a single Rust binary that runs a coding and automation agent as a desktop app, a CLI REPL, a one-shot `-p` command, or a `--serve` web server. The server exposes OpenAI-compatible `/v1/chat/completions` and Anthropic-compatible `/v1/messages` endpoints. It supports 27 providers including Ollama, plus MCP servers, skills, hooks, scheduled jobs, and OS-level Bash confinement.

Who it is for: Developers wanting a provider-agnostic coding agent in terminal or desktop

Strengths

  • One binary covers desktop GUI, CLI REPL, non-interactive mode, and HTTP server
  • Catalogue lists 1,100+ models across 27 providers, plus Ollama for fully local use
  • Bash runs inside Seatbelt, Landlock, or bubblewrap confinement by default
  • Supports MCP, AGENTS.md, SKILL.md, hooks, plugins, cron scheduling, and multi-agent teams

Weaknesses

  • Young project (started April 2026) with roughly weekly releases
  • v0.126.0 moves existing workspaces into .thclaws/bots/main/, breaking absolute paths
  • Discord, Slack, and WhatsApp bridges are not built yet
  • README badge says MIT OR Apache-2.0, while detected license is Apache-2.0

What it needs

  • GPU optional
  • Docker + Compose
  • Needs LLM provider API key or local Ollama, Rust, Node.js 20+, pnpm 10+ (build from source only)
  • Models: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Ollama, LMStudio
  • port 7878

Quick answers

Is thclaws open source?

Yes. Its code is on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license.

Can you run thclaws with Docker?

Yes. Its repository has a Docker setup: a Dockerfile, a Compose file or a published image.
