Overview

SkillKit is a TypeScript CLI that installs skills from GitHub, GitLab, gists or local paths and translates them between agent formats such as SKILL.md and Cursor .mdc. It recommends skills from your repo's stack, scans skills for security issues, and can serve skill search over REST or MCP. Extras include session memory, AI skill generation and a terminal UI.

Who it is for: Developers using several AI coding agents who want shared, portable skills

Strengths

  • Translates one skill into formats for 46 agents, including Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and Copilot
  • Installs from GitHub, GitLab, gists and local paths; runs via npx with no setup
  • Slim install with --omit=optional: 118 packages versus 418 for the full install
  • Exposes skill search over REST on port 3737, an MCP server and a Python client

Weaknesses

  • Broad scope: memory, mesh, messaging, issue planner and workflows all bundled in one tool
  • Skill quality depends on third-party sources; the 400K+ skills count comes from the README
  • AI skill generation needs an external model provider such as Claude, GPT-4, Gemini or Ollama
  • Install demo detects 32 agents while the README claims 46 supported

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Node.js, npm
  • Models: Claude, GPT-4, Gemini, Ollama, OpenRouter
  • port 3737
