Overview

Rune is a native IDE and terminal multiplexer written in Go, rendering with OpenGL on Linux and Metal on macOS instead of Electron. It offers nine workspace slots, language intelligence for a documented list of languages, and a built-in agent or IDE skills for external agents. Rune instances connect over an end-to-end encrypted peer network built on headscale, and a headless node can serve workspaces to your other machines.

Who it is for: Developers wanting a native IDE and terminal multiplexer with agent support

Strengths

  • Native rendering pipeline (OpenGL on Linux, Metal on macOS), no Electron
  • Peer network lets you open remote workspaces via rune:// URLs
  • Headless node runs as a Docker container or a systemd, launchd, OpenRC or runit service
  • Packages install from official sources or directly from a Git repository

Weaknesses

  • GPL-3.0 license may restrict embedding in proprietary products
  • Remote networking depends on the project's own headscale network
  • README lists only macOS and Linux install paths; Windows support unknown

What it needs

  • Docker
  • Needs headscale network (hosted by project)

Quick answers

Is rune open source?

Yes. Its code is on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license.

Can you run rune with Docker?

Yes. Its repository has a Docker setup: a Dockerfile, a Compose file or a published image.
