Overview

Rulesync is a Node.js CLI that keeps AI tool configuration in a single `.rulesync/` source directory and generates the files each tool expects. It covers rules, ignore files, MCP config, commands, subagents, skills, hooks and permissions for dozens of tools, including Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Codex CLI and Cline. It can also import existing configs or convert directly between tool formats.

Who it is for: Developers using several AI coding tools who want shared rules and configs

Strengths

  • One source directory generates configs for 60+ listed tools, so rules are not duplicated
  • `import` pulls existing CLAUDE.md, .cursorrules or Copilot files into .rulesync/
  • `convert --from cursor --to copilot, claudecode` translates formats without .rulesync/ files
  • Installs via npm, Homebrew or a single binary

Weaknesses

  • Feature support varies per tool; many targets lack ignore, hooks or checks
  • Several targets are deprecated or end of life (Roo Code, Continue, Tabnine legacy)
  • The `ignore` feature is deprecated in favor of `permissions`
  • Plugin-packaging targets are excluded from `--targets "*"` and need explicit output roots

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Node.js

Quick answers
