Overview

ripwire is a single C++23 binary that indexes a repository into a deterministic, ranked call graph and answers orientation questions (`ripwire .`, `--for`, `--callers`, `--path`, `--recall`). On edits it reports blast radius, tests that reach the change, and quality regressions via `--edit-check` and `--quality-delta`. The installer also writes skills for agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, Gemini, opencode and aider; an MCP server is optional.

Who it is for: Developers running coding agents on large repos who want cheaper context

Strengths

  • Single offline binary with no runtime dependencies, API key, embeddings or daemon
  • Indexes this repo in 0.25 s using 6.6 MB, per its own benchmark
  • Answers disclose truncation, label floors, and give a next= to recover cut rows
  • Covers about 25 languages and installs skills for seven agent CLIs in one line

Weaknesses

  • Benchmarks and the field report are the authors' own, not independent measurements
  • Contract checker arity heuristic over-counts on defaulted trailing parameters
  • Plain grep can still win on broad, common-word conceptual queries
  • MCP server schemas consume agent context every session; CLI is the preferred route

What it needs

  • no GPU
