Overview
OpenCursor is a VS Code extension that adds an agent chat able to read and edit files, search code, run terminal commands and check browser behavior. It connects to subscription accounts, API keys, custom OpenAI- or Anthropic-compatible endpoints, or local Ollama and llama.cpp models. Edits can be reviewed per hunk and kept or undone, with permission controls for actions.
Who it is for: VS Code users wanting a Cursor-style agent with their own models or local LLMs
Strengths
- Many providers: OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, plus Claude Code and Copilot accounts
- Local inference via Ollama or llama.cpp with GGUF download, plus local embeddings for code search
- Per-hunk change review with Keep All and Undo All, and Ask, Plan and Agent modes
- Supports MCP servers, hooks, skills, subagents and Git worktrees; MIT licensed
Weaknesses
- Runs only inside VS Code 1.96 or newer; no standalone editor or CLI
- Account-based providers depend on third-party login flows that may change or be restricted
- Some features download native runtimes or models on first use, which breaks offline setup
- Web search, doc fetching, browser tools and remote workers need external services
What it needs
- GPU optional
- Needs VS Code 1.96+, Node.js 22 and pnpm (build from source), Ollama or llama.cpp (optional, local models), Chrome or Edge (browser tools), Docker (optional, command execution)
- Models: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, xAI
