Overview

Open Island is a SwiftUI and AppKit menu bar and notch app that shows live status for local coding agents, handles permission prompts, and jumps back to the right terminal or IDE. Agents report through hooks or plugins that forward JSON over a Unix socket to an in-app bridge. It lists 15 agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI and OpenCode, and runs without a server or account.

Who it is for: macOS developers running several terminal coding agents at once

Strengths

  • Covers 15 agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Kimi CLI and OpenCode
  • Hooks fail open, so agents keep running if the app is not open
  • Jump-back works with Ghostty, iTerm2, tmux, Zellij, WezTerm, Warp and JetBrains IDEs
  • Distributed as notarized DMG or Homebrew cask, with Sparkle auto-update

Weaknesses

  • macOS 14+ only; building from source needs Swift 6.2 and Xcode
  • Grok Build and Gemini CLI events are observation-only, with no permission round-trip
  • Codex default install omits PreToolUse and PostToolUse; file-edit approval is not guaranteed
  • Claude Desktop usage panel only updates after a terminal claude session seeds the cache

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs macOS 14+, Swift 6.2 and Xcode (source builds)
