Overview
Nanocoder is a terminal coding agent written in TypeScript, installed through npm, Homebrew or Nix. It runs against local models via Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible API, and offers interactive and non-interactive modes, MCP server configuration, skills, hooks and PR review from the CLI. It is developed by the Nano Collective, a non-profit community group.
Who it is for: Developers who want a terminal coding agent with their choice of model
Strengths
- Provider-agnostic: Ollama locally, or OpenRouter, Requesty, Anthropic, Google via compatible APIs
- Several modes (normal, auto-accept, yolo, plan, architect) selectable with --mode
- Non-interactive `run` command and `review` command for branches or PRs
- README states no paid tiers and no telemetry sending prompts
Weaknesses
- `nanocoder review` is diff-only and needs a TTY; output cannot be captured to a file
- `worktree` command requires Git and an authenticated gh CLI
- License is reported as NOASSERTION, so terms are unclear from metadata
- Hardware requirements for local models are not documented in the README
What it needs
- GPU optional
- Needs Node.js/npm, Ollama (for local models), Git and gh CLI (worktree command)
- Models: Ollama, OpenAI-compatible APIs, OpenRouter, Requesty, Anthropic
