Overview
A Go MCP server that lets an MCP client query a Grafana instance: search and patch dashboards, run PromQL and LogQL, manage alert rules, incidents, OnCall schedules and annotations. Many integrations (SQL, CloudWatch, InfluxDB, Elasticsearch, admin) are off by default and enabled with --enabled-tools. Runs via uvx, Docker, binary or Helm, authenticating with a Grafana service account token.
Who it is for: Engineers connecting coding or ops agents to Grafana observability data
Strengths
- Covers dashboards, Prometheus, Loki, alerting, incidents and OnCall in one server
- Dashboard summary and JSONPath property tools reduce context window use
- SQL queries go through Grafana datasource plugins, so the server never sees credentials
- Optional tool groups and a --disable-write flag limit what the agent can do
Weaknesses
- Requires Grafana 9.0 or later; some datasource features fail on older versions
- Many tool groups (SQL, CloudWatch, InfluxDB, admin, panel queries) are disabled by default
- Agent Observability tools work only in Grafana Cloud
- Fetching full dashboard JSON can consume large amounts of context
What it needs
- no GPU
- Docker + Compose
- Needs Grafana 9.0+, Grafana service account token, uv (for uvx quick start)
