Overview
Formerly the Magic MCP server, this package is now a stdio proxy that forwards MCP messages to the hosted 21st MCP at 21st.dev/api/mcp, so old `@21st-dev/magic` configs keep working. The hosted server offers component, theme and template search, code retrieval, and UI generation when AI access is enabled. The repo is also packaged as a plugin for Claude Code, Codex CLI and Grok Build.

Strengths
- Legacy Magic tool names are translated, so old agent prompts and mcp.json entries still work
- Installs with one CLI command for Cursor, Claude, VS Code, Windsurf or Codex
- Accepts the API key in several historical argument forms and two environment variables
- Ships plugin manifests for Claude Code, Codex CLI and Grok Build
Weaknesses
- Requires a 21st.dev API key and a hosted backend; the server logic is not in this repo
- Old Magic API keys were reset and must be regenerated
- Hosted AI generation is separate from builder access; `generate` is listed only when AI is enabled
- Package is a compatibility shim; the README recommends moving to the 21st CLI
