Overview

jg takes a natural-language question about a repository and prints relevant files, reading leads and verbatim source excerpts with line references to stdout. It uses the Jev model, called through a provider key, to judge relevance across folders, files and declarations. A bundled skill, installed with `jg skill`, teaches coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode to call it.

Who it is for: Developers running coding agents on unfamiliar codebases

Strengths

  • Installs an agent skill for Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode with one command
  • Respects ignore files and skips hidden, binary and .env files by default
  • No Python, Bun or ripgrep install needed; runs on Node 22+
  • Published eval: 8/10 SWE-bench tasks solved with and without it, Sol cost down 28.6%

Weaknesses

  • Source content is sent to the chosen provider; secret filtering is heuristic, not redaction
  • Needs a provider key for Vercel AI Gateway, TypeSafe, OpenRouter or OpenCode Zen
  • Benchmark covers ten Python tasks; total cost including Jev fell 25.8%, no speed gain claimed
  • Declaration parsing covers only Python, TS/JS, Go and Rust; other text uses a fallback
