Overview

Harmonist installs 193 markdown agent definitions plus IDE hooks into a project. The stop hook blocks a code-changing turn until a reviewer such as qa-verifier has run and session-handoff.md is updated, with a retry cap of 3. Memory writes go through a schema-validated, secret-scanning CLI, and shipped files are checked against a SHA-256 manifest before install.

Who it is for: Developers who want enforced review and memory rules in AI coding sessions

Strengths

  • Stop hook gates turns on reviewer runs and memory updates, not on prompt wording
  • Pure Python 3.9+ stdlib; no npm, Docker or database; runs on native Windows
  • MANIFEST.sha256 check refuses tampered agent files during upgrade and extras install
  • Memory entries are schema-validated and scanned for about 30 secret patterns

Weaknesses

  • Primary integration targets Cursor; other assistants go through adapters of unstated maturity
  • PROTOCOL-SKIP lets the model bypass the gate; only skip-rate warnings check it
  • Needs an assistant that supports subagent dispatch and hooks
  • Integration is done by an AI following a prompt, so results depend on the model

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Python 3.9+, Git, Bash 3.2+ (optional), AI coding assistant with subagent support
  • Models: Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, Windsurf, Aider
