Overview
gptcommit is a Rust CLI that installs a git prepare-commit-msg hook and fills in the commit message from the staged diff using an OpenAI model. It summarizes each changed file with up to four concurrent requests, then generates a title and summary, with optional conventional-commit prefixes. Settings are layered from a user TOML file, a per-repo file and GPTCOMMIT__* environment variables.
Who it is for: Developers who want LLM-drafted git commit messages from the terminal
Strengths
- Runs inside normal `git commit` via a prepare-commit-msg hook; generated text stays editable
- Layered config (user, repo, env vars) with `gptcommit config` subcommands
- Git-style `file_ignore` patterns skip lockfiles and minified files before anything is sent
- Supports custom API base URL, proxy and model override; output in en, zh-cn, zh-tw, ja
Weaknesses
- Only OpenAI-style APIs are documented; no local model support is described
- Sends diff contents to the API, and costs grow with N+2 prompts per commit
- Hook skips commits that use a template or amend unless `allow-amend` is set
- A failed file summary stops generation instead of being skipped
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs OpenAI API key, git, Rust toolchain (cargo) or Homebrew to install
- Models: OpenAI models (default gpt-6-luna), custom OpenAI-compatible API base, fine-tuned OpenAI models
