Overview
gentle-shell is a Pi-native package that turns a Pi coding-agent session into a workspace. It adds a live changes viewer across worktrees, subagent cards, per-role model profiles and a command palette. Its ODD workflow keeps small tasks inline and delegates to explorers, writers or verifiers only for named reasons.
Who it is for: Pi users who want a terminal coding agent with review and subagent control
Strengths
- Shows uncommitted changes across session and subagent worktrees in one diff viewer
- Subagents run as separate processes with live model, token, cost and elapsed cards
- Routing rules come with linked benchmark PRs and issues
- Installers for macOS, Windows and Linux; one prefix bundles Pi, Gentle AI and Engram
Weaknesses
- Requires Pi; it is not a standalone agent
- Benchmarks are single runs (n=1); the large task took about 3x longer than Codex CLI
- Workflow concepts (ODD, RDD, 4R lenses) add a learning curve
- Native review needs a filesystem honoring private POSIX modes; WSL DrvFS may fail
What it needs
- Needs Pi, Gentle AI v4.1.1, Engram, Git
- Models: Provider models via Pi, Per-role model profiles
