Overview

Compound Engineering is a plugin of 36 skills for AI coding agents, organized around a loop of brainstorm, plan, work, simplify, review and compound. The compound step writes learnings into docs/solutions/, which later brainstorm and plan runs read as context. It installs on 14 agent hosts, including Claude Code, Cursor and Codex, and includes an autonomous /lfg pipeline that can open a PR and watch CI.

Who it is for: Developers using AI coding agents who want a structured, documented workflow

Strengths

  • Runs on 14 agent hosts, including Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Copilot and OpenCode
  • Captures learnings as repo files (docs/solutions/) that later planning reads
  • Covers the full cycle: brainstorm, plan, work, review, plus debug, commit and PR skills
  • Artifact folder location is configurable via the docs_root setting

Weaknesses

  • 36 skills and a multi-step workflow add process overhead for small changes
  • Install steps differ per host; Cline and Pi need extra setup or companion packages
  • Compound Packs for org-wide rules are marked experimental
  • Some Devin skills use Claude-style tool names and prompt for permission

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs An AI coding agent host (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, etc.), pi-subagents (Pi only)
