Overview
Claurst is a terminal coding agent written in Rust, started as a clean-room reimplementation of Claude Code's behavior and now routing to several providers, including Anthropic and a ChatGPT (Codex) subscription. It has a TUI, a headless mode with stream-json output, hooks, skills, AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md loading, and an ACP server for editors such as Zed. Version 0.2.0 is labelled beta.
Who it is for: Developers who want a terminal coding agent usable with several model providers
Strengths
- Prebuilt binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows; installs via script, npm or bun
- Speaks Agent Client Protocol (`claurst acp`), so Zed and other ACP editors can drive it
- Follows Claude Code's hooks contract, plus skills and AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md instruction files
- Headless mode emits typed stream-json events and structured answers via --json-schema
Weaknesses
- Beta (v0.2.0); README warns of rough edges in experimental features
- Seatbelt shell sandbox is described for macOS only
- Free Mode, /goal, /share and ultracode are flagged experimental
- Default build needs ALSA for voice; headless systems must disable default features
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs Provider API key or ChatGPT subscription login, Rust toolchain (build from source only)
- Models: Anthropic, ChatGPT (Codex) subscription, other providers via /connect
