Overview

Genie is a VS Code extension that sends selected code to OpenAI GPT-4, GPT-3.5 or Codex models, or to Azure OpenAI deployments, using your own API key. It adds context-menu commands (explain, find bugs, add tests, optimize), a sidebar chat with streaming and on-disk history, a diff view of suggestions, and commit message generation. The repository holds documentation and issue tracking only.

Who it is for: VS Code users who want OpenAI-backed code help in the editor

Strengths

  • Context-menu commands for explain, find bugs, add tests, optimize, with editable prompts
  • Supports Azure OpenAI deployments via the genieai.azure.url setting
  • Generates git commit messages, with configurable prompt and opt-out setting
  • Conversation history stored locally and exportable as Markdown

Weaknesses

  • Only OpenAI and Azure OpenAI backends are documented; no local or other providers
  • Repository is for docs and bug reports; extension source is not included
  • Requires an OpenAI API key, billed separately from ChatGPT Plus
  • Conversation history is experimental and opt-in, with limitations noted in the README

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Visual Studio Code, OpenAI API key or Azure OpenAI deployment
  • Models: gpt-4o, gpt-4-turbo, gpt-4, gpt-3.5-turbo, o1-mini
