Overview

Amazon Q Developer CLI is the Rust source for the `q` command, which lets you talk to Amazon Q Developer from the terminal. The repository is no longer actively maintained and gets only critical security fixes, since the product continues as the closed-source Kiro CLI. The README covers installation and a cargo-based contributor setup, but not the agent features themselves.

Who it is for: Engineers studying the Amazon Q CLI source or evaluating its Kiro CLI successor

Strengths

  • Open source Rust codebase under Apache-2.0 (dual MIT), buildable with cargo run --bin chat_cli
  • Installers for macOS (DMG, Homebrew) and Linux (Ubuntu/Debian, AppImage, alternative builds)
  • Includes docs and scripts directories for studying how the CLI is built

Weaknesses

  • No longer actively maintained; only critical security fixes are accepted
  • Successor Kiro CLI is closed source, so new features will not land here
  • Requires an Amazon Q Developer login; README documents no other model backends
  • README has no feature list, model details or usage examples

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Amazon Q Developer account (login), Rust toolchain (to build)
  • Models: unknown
