Overview
ai-memory is a Rust server that records coding-agent sessions through lifecycle hooks and MCP, consolidates them into markdown wiki pages in git, and injects a brief into the next session. Handoffs let you move from Claude Code to Codex or another supported agent, across machines or team members. Capture, FTS search and handoffs work with no LLM call; vectors and LLM consolidation are optional.
Who it is for: Developers using several coding agents who want shared project memory
Strengths
- Markdown wiki in git is the source of truth; the database index can be rebuilt
- Default path needs no LLM or API key: capture, FTS search, handoffs
- Over twenty agent harnesses supported, with claim-once typed handoffs between them
- Multi-user auth, attribution and audit log included, not a paid tier
Weaknesses
- Native Windows support is experimental; WSL2 is the supported route
- Docker quick-start runs with no authentication unless a token is added
- Compaction, dedup and LLM dream pass are off by default and need opt-in
- Several agents (Claude Desktop, Zed, VS Code Copilot) are MCP-only, without hooks
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs SQLite, git, systemd or launchd (native service)
- Models: Anthropic (optional LLM), OpenAI (optional embeddings), local embeddings (optional)
- port 49374
