Overview
Trigger.dev is a TypeScript SDK and runtime for writing long-running background tasks in your own codebase and deploying them to a managed cloud or a self-hosted instance. Tasks run without timeouts and get retries, queues, checkpointing, waitpoints for human approval, realtime streaming to frontends, and per-run tracing. Build extensions let tasks use system packages such as Python, FFmpeg and browsers.
Who it is for: TypeScript developers running long-running AI jobs and agent backends
Strengths
- Tasks have no timeouts, with checkpointing and automatic retries for long AI jobs
- Waitpoints pause a run until a human approves, rejects or gives feedback
- Realtime API and React hooks stream run state and LLM output to the frontend
- Self-hostable with Docker Compose or an official Helm chart for Kubernetes
Weaknesses
- Code-first and TypeScript/JavaScript only; no visual workflow builder
- Managed cloud is the primary path; self-hosting needs extra setup and services
- Not an agent framework; you bring your own LLM libraries and orchestration
- Self-hosting resource requirements are not stated in the README
What it needs
- no GPU
