Overview
Swarms is a Python library for building LLM agents and combining them into multi-agent structures such as sequential, concurrent, DAG-based, hierarchical and mixture-of-agents workflows. Agents can use MCP servers via mcp_url, and MCPDeployer can serve an agent or swarm as an authenticated MCP server. The README claims 60+ multi-agent structures and a SwarmRouter that switches between them.
Who it is for: Python developers building multi-agent pipelines in code
Strengths
- Prebuilt structures: Sequential, Concurrent, GraphWorkflow (DAG), Hierarchical, MixtureOfAgents, GroupChat
- SwarmRouter switches swarm type through one swarm_type parameter
- MCP client via mcp_url, plus MCPDeployer to serve agents as MCP servers with auth
- Official Docker image for linux/amd64 and linux/arm64 on Python 3.13
Weaknesses
- Last tagged release is 2024-12-27, so the PyPI package may lag master
- README examples use hosted model APIs; local model setup is not shown
- Environment config lists a SWARMS_TELEMETRY_ON variable
- Enterprise-grade and production-ready claims come with no benchmarks in the README
What it needs
- no GPU
- Docker
- Needs LLM provider API key (OpenAI, Anthropic or Groq), RouteHub or litellm (optional, swarms[fast]), rustworkx (optional)
- Models: OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq
