Overview

River implements online machine learning algorithms in Python, where models update one sample at a time through learn_one and predict_one. It covers linear models, decision trees, nearest neighbors, anomaly and drift detection, clustering, bandits and time series forecasting, plus metrics and progressive validation. It resulted from merging creme and scikit-multiflow.

Who it is for: Python developers doing ML on streaming data or with concept drift

Strengths

  • Models learn per sample without revisiting past data, suited to event-based streams
  • Broad algorithm set: trees, linear models, drift detection, clustering, bandits, forecasting
  • Core learn_one/predict_one interface has no pandas dependency
  • Wheels for Linux, macOS and Windows; BSD-3-Clause license

Weaknesses

  • README states it favors clarity over performance
  • Requires Python 3.11 or newer
  • Mini-batch methods need the optional pandas extra
  • Building from source needs Cython and Rust

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Python 3.11+, pandas (optional, for mini-batch)
  • Models: linear models, decision trees, random forests, nearest neighbors, clustering

Quick answers

Is river open source?

Yes. Its code is on GitHub under the BSD-3-Clause license.

Does river need a GPU?

No, it runs without one.
