Overview

Read Frog is a Chrome, Edge and Firefox extension for language learners. It translates web pages in bilingual or translation-only mode, translates selected text, and adds bilingual subtitles on YouTube, X and Netflix. Saved vocabulary goes to Notebase and is reviewed as flashcards on a spaced-repetition schedule. It connects to 20+ LLM providers through the Vercel AI SDK, plus Google Translate, Microsoft Translate and DeepLX.

Who it is for: Language learners who read and watch foreign-language content in a browser

Strengths

  • Works with 20+ providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek and local Ollama
  • Free translation backends available: Google Translate, Microsoft Translate, DeepLX
  • Request batching claims up to 70% lower API cost, with retry and per-request fallback
  • Custom AI actions with structured output, plus flashcard review of saved words

Weaknesses

  • Dual-licensed GPLv3 and commercial; closed-source use needs a separate license
  • AI transcription for YouTube videos without captions is limited to Pro and Ultra plans
  • README says the project is under active development, so behavior may change
  • Runs only inside Chrome, Edge or Firefox; no standalone app

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox, LLM provider API key or free translation service
  • Models: OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, xAI Grok
