Overview
OWL is a Python multi-agent framework built on CAMEL-AI that runs a society of agents with toolkits for Playwright browser control, web search, document parsing, code execution and MCP servers. It reports a 69.09 average on the GAIA benchmark and ships example scripts for OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Qwen, Deepseek and Ollama, plus a web UI. The README recommends OpenAI models and says other models score lower on complex tasks.
Who it is for: Developers building multi-agent task automation or reproducing GAIA results
Strengths
- Reports 69.09 average on GAIA, with a separate branch for reproducing benchmark runs
- Many built-in toolkits: Playwright browser, search engines, Office/PDF parsing, code execution, MCP
- Example scripts for OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Qwen, Deepseek, Azure and Ollama
- Training dataset and model checkpoints released on Hugging Face
Weaknesses
- No license detected in the repository metadata
- README says non-OpenAI models perform significantly worse on complex tasks
- Needs models with strong tool calling; multimodal toolkits also need multimodal models
- Training code is listed as coming soon; GAIA runs need separate branches
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs Python 3.10-3.12, CAMEL-AI, Playwright, Node.js (for MCP), LLM API key (e.g. OPENAI_API_KEY)
- Models: OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Qwen, Deepseek
