Overview

OpenDesign is a desktop and self-hostable workspace that turns a brief into web or mobile prototypes, slide decks, images and HyperFrames motion graphics, using a coding agent already on your PATH such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor. Output follows a DESIGN.md brand contract, with 151 design-system packages, skills, templates and plugins bundled. A BYOK proxy covers setups without an agent CLI.

Who it is for: Designers and developers who want agent-generated prototypes and decks

Ranked among open-source alternatives to Copilot Studio (#5 of 10).

Strengths

  • Works with 26 coding-agent CLIs, with MCP setup via `od mcp install <agent>`
  • Ships 151 design systems, 15 deck templates and 93 image prompt templates
  • BYOK proxy covers OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure, Gemini, Ollama, LM Studio and vLLM, with SSRF checks
  • Decks export to HTML, PDF, PPTX, ZIP or Markdown; video renders to MP4

Weaknesses

  • Ships no agent of its own; needs a separate agent CLI or API key
  • No prebuilt Linux desktop release; Linux requires running from source
  • Video rendering depends on headless Chrome and FFmpeg
  • README promotes paid OpenDesign Cloud and credit plans alongside the open-source app

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Docker + Compose
  • Needs Coding agent CLI or LLM API key, Node.js and pnpm (run from source), Headless Chrome and FFmpeg (video)
  • Models: Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, DeepSeek Harness, OpenAI-compatible APIs
