Overview

NullClaw is a self-hosted autonomous assistant written in Zig that connects 50+ model providers to 19 chat channels such as Telegram, Discord, Signal, Slack and Matrix. It ships 35+ tools, subagents, MCP support, cron and heartbeat tasks, and SQLite-backed memory with FTS5 plus vector hybrid search. Config follows the OpenClaw layout, and a migrate command imports existing OpenClaw memory.

Who it is for: Self-hosters running a chat-reachable agent on low-power or edge hardware

Strengths

  • README reports a 678 KB static binary, about 1 MB peak RSS, and under 8 ms startup
  • Gateway binds 127.0.0.1 by default, requires pairing, and encrypts API keys with ChaCha20-Poly1305
  • Sandbox backends: Landlock, Firejail, Bubblewrap and Docker, auto-detected
  • Memory backends include SQLite, Markdown, PostgreSQL, Redis, ClickHouse and LanceDB

Weaknesses

  • Source builds need exactly Zig 0.16.0; other versions are unsupported
  • Benchmark comparisons are the project's own, from a single macOS arm64 run
  • Nostr channel requires the external nak tool in PATH
  • Vertex AI service-account auth requires openssl in PATH

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Docker + Compose
  • Needs Zig 0.16.0 (source builds), nak (Nostr channel), openssl (Vertex service-account auth)
  • Models: OpenRouter, Anthropic, OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Gemini
  • port 3000
