Overview

MimiClaw is ESP-IDF firmware that turns an ESP32-S3 board with 16 MB flash and 8 MB PSRAM into a personal assistant reached through Telegram. It runs a ReAct agent loop against Anthropic or OpenAI APIs, with web search, cron scheduling and a periodic heartbeat. Memory, chat history and config are kept as plain text files on the chip's flash.

Who it is for: Embedded hobbyists wanting an always-on Telegram AI assistant on cheap hardware

Strengths

  • Runs on a single ESP32-S3 board with no Linux or Node.js; written in C
  • Memory, personality and tasks are plain editable files (SOUL.md, MEMORY.md, HEARTBEAT.md)
  • Switches between Anthropic and OpenAI at runtime via serial CLI, stored in NVS
  • Persistent cron jobs and a 30-minute heartbeat let the agent act unprompted

Weaknesses

  • Requires specific hardware: ESP32-S3 with 16 MB flash and 8 MB PSRAM
  • Needs ESP-IDF v5.5+ toolchain; build-time secrets changes require a full rebuild
  • Telegram is the only chat channel; models are remote APIs, no local inference
  • Small tool set: web search, current time and cron management only

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs ESP32-S3 board (16 MB flash, 8 MB PSRAM), ESP-IDF v5.5+, Telegram bot token, Anthropic or OpenAI API key, Tavily or Brave Search API key (optional)
  • Models: Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT
  • port 18789

Quick answers

Is mimiclaw open source?
